About POLIS

POLIS is the leading network of cities and regions, working together on sustainable mobility and innovation while advocating for greater involvement of local and regional authorities in national and international mobility policy.

Since 1989, European local and regional authorities have been working together within POLIS to promote sustainable mobility through the deployment of innovative transport solutions. Our mission is three-fold:

EXCHANGE OF KNOWLEDGE

Our aim is to improve local transport through integrated strategies that address the economic, social and environmental dimensions of transport. To this end, we support the exchange of experiences and the transfer of knowledge between European local and regional authorities. We also facilitate the dialogue between local and regional authorities and other mobility stakeholders such as industry, research centres and universities, and NGOs.

ACCESS TO EUROPEAN RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

We foster cooperation and partnerships across Europe with the aim of making research and innovation and access to related EU funding in transport more accessible to cities and regions. That is why we actively support the participation of our members in European projects. Our expertise allows us to create a framework which facilitates dialogue and exchange between local authorities, the transport research community, and the industry.

THE GO-TO EUROPEAN NETWORK FOR local and regional sustainable MOBILITY ISSUES

At POLIS we strive to provide decision makers with the necessary information and tools for making sustainable mobility a reality. Political representatives from POLIS members convene regularly within the POLIS Political Group, and engage in high-level dialogues with each other, the European institutions, and the private sector.

Cities, regions, and related entities

Ljubljana’s transformation shows what is possible when a city places people, public space, and quality of life at the heart of its mobility vision. Yet achieving climate neutrality and healthier urban environments is a shared effort—one that requires local leadership, strong partnerships, and open exchange among cities and regions.

As POLIS president, Ljubljana aims to support a local and regional community that drives innovation, strengthens cooperation with European institutions, and advances fair and effective mobility solutions across the continent. Together, we can shape cities that are more connected, more resilient, and truly built for their people.
